The fact is that at present China does not have overhead traveling casting cranes- a kind of special crane. On the basis of the crane information collected at home and abroad, the paper systematically explains the research and development of 11- ton overhead traveling casting crane which is operated in the environment of high temperature, plentiful dust and easy explosion.Concerning the special requirements of the operation of such crane, after detailed analysis and research the paper now recommends a new method-the bridge of a two-girder overhead crane is formed by the bridges of two single-girder overhead cranes through intermediately joined end beams; by means of the arrangement of the hoisting mechanism to the trolley frame and the revolution of the fixed column and the movable column is effected through the vertical revolution of the hoisting gear, the joining of the fixed component with the revolving component is ingeniously solved, and the axial compression is also reduced. Regarding the possible effect of the lateral force to the vertical column, the paper puts forward a proposal of the 4-point arrangement for the traveling driving unit and the 2-point diagonal arrangement for the traversing driving unit. The slewing bearing is selected through the analysis of the compressive force of the slewing bearing and the performance calculation of the driving unit; the reliability of the wheels and the axles is analyzed and calculated through the compression of the wheels and the axles. In the cranes industry, the reliable probability design method is adopted to the product design.The paper offers systematic explanation of the proposal for crane design, the design of major components, the reliability analysis of key components, the installation and the maintenance of the crane. The research and development of this kind of crane enriches the types of casting cranes and exerts a thrust for the development of special cranes.
