The computerized process monitoring system is an indispensable means for continuous and safe operation of the 5MW Low Temperature Nuclear Heating Reactor. Owing to the fact that all the electronic and mechanical parts of the system were seriously aginged after over 20 years operation, and that the products had been washed out for a long time, so no spare parts can be found on the market, it is necessary for the long-term safe operation of 5MW reactor to update the computer system. The topic under discussion is an important part of the subject study "The System Updating of 5 MW Low Temperature Nuclear Reactor" of Tsinghua University's "985"mayor project. The main R&D works and major results include: 1) Based on thorough investigation on current status and technical trends of NPP I&Cs, analysis of functional demands of 5MW reactor and on-site situations, and setting up of governing principle, a scheme of combined configuration of fieldbus and industrial Ethernet was selected. It can well satisfy the current needs of updating and the potential demands for future use. 2) Through establishment of a typical experimental system and thorough test on the architecture and key techniques involving the implementation of the updating, the feasibility of the updating can be proved, and the good results demonstrated. 3) Taking full use of the experimental system, the development of the application software was finished, in which advanced object-oriented method and the component method were used. All essential functions were realized. 4) Base on all the above-mentioned R&D works, an arrangement for the implementation of the updating, including steps and investment estimation was suggested. The research work has achieved following fruits: a feasible scheme for the updating program was given, all the technical issues involved in the hardware intergration and software development were verified and solved, the effects of the updating were demonstrated.
