With the development of power system and automation, it is inevitable to make the integrated realization of unattended substation, especially for the substation where living conditions are very poor. Remote video monitoring of power system is also named as remote watching of power system. It is a very important part of unattended substation and an essential supplement for the remote control, adjustment, measurement and signal. It gains more and more attention.However, the stability of remote watching of power system at present based on remote video monitoring computer is not enough to meet the requirements of unattended substation. Based on embedded technology, the remote watching devices may get a better stability and a smaller size and may be easily embedded into complex systems. For the reasons above, a novel scheme based on embedded technology in remote watching of power system is proposed, and two kinds of remote watching devices are designed. An embedded video compression device is selected as remote watching of power system via economical and technical comparison.Firstly, the paper analyses the present outline and trend in future of video monitoring and discusses existing problems of remote watching of power system. Secondly, it deeply studies embedded technology, real-time operation systems, video compression and MPEG-X standards. Finally, two kinds of real-time video monitoring scheme are proposed, MPEG-4 codec program is programmed, and the effect of MPEG-4 codec program is validated.The proposed scheme has some important significance to the development of power system and automation.
