This paper is focused on the important theories, methods and practice inthe design of residence in the western countries after IndustrialRevolution. In terms of the regional background, history development,designing methodology and practical works, it was divided into two eras:Modern Urban, which was the practice of Functionalism in the westerncountries; Contemporary Urban, which was with a deep regard into thepostwar housing design and paid attention to humanism, pluralism andsynthesis.
