With the rising demand of passenger transportation, there's urgent need for the railway industry to improve its capacity for passenger shipment. But the current economic situation of the country doesn't allow complete construction of intercity excluded double-track railway for passenger train at many areas, and the planned intercity line can't only serve the need of passenger transportation either. Therefore, the problem arises as to how to evaluate the capacity of passenger train dominated single-track railway when planning new railway line. The main purpose of the thesis is to solve the problem of calculating the capacity of passenger train dominated single-track railway. We analyze the characteristics of passenger train dominated single-track railway as well as the high-speed demand of passenger train. After initiatively introduce the conception of virtual confined segment, we summarize the corresponding calculation method for capacity. On the other hand, we develop a computer simulation system for making train diagram of passenger train dominated single-track railway by adopting object-oriented method. This system serves as an effective tool for making train diagram of single-track railway. Meanwhile, it helps to determine the parameters from the calculation method of virtual confined segment. The combination of the calculation method of virtual confined segment with the computer simulation system for making train diagram can effectively solve the problem of calculating the capacity of passenger train dominated single-track railway. At the same time, the solution has a guiding significance for evaluating the capacities of both passenger and cargo trains of single-track railway in plan as well as evaluating the operational coordination of both passenger and cargo trains.
