In pumping water supply system the hydraulic transients (or water hammer) will take place frequently. Water hammer will be caused by malfunctioning valve , inadvertent stoppage of the pump by operator , pump failure , and disaster , etc. . Some pumping stations were damaged by water hammer , and caused heavy losses on the normal production and daily life . So the researchers have paid a great attention to the investigation on water hammer , in order to ensure the pumping stations safety in operation . Using the method of field experiments and theoretical calculation , this paper investigates the hydraulic transients , the aim is to ensure safety of the investigated pumping stations by optimizing the closed process of the butterfly valves installed. This paper introduces briefly the characteristic method on calculating the hydraulic transients of pumping station , establishes the boundary condition of pumps in parallel , and raises the calculating method . The calculating program is written , which can calculate the hydraulic transients of all pumps in parallel failure and a part of pumps in parallel failure . The hydraulic transients of two pumping units are tested differently in site when pump failure happened , the proper parameters for calculating the hydraulic transients of the pumpingstation are obtained . The calculated result by the program is extremely close to the experimental result.Using trying method , the calculating program optimizing the closed process of butterfly valves installed in the pumping stations is written . Regulating the closed process of the valves in the light of the result optimized , the pumping stations investigated will be safety in operation . At last, this paper makes some suggestions on the operation of the pumping stations , and points out some problems to be investigated in the future.
