The development of new-era cities is confronted with new opportunities andchallenges. Their future layouts and sPatial forms are greatly influenced byindustrialization, informationalization and economic globalization. Ecological andsustainab1e developments have been the fOcus topics of people, but civil planners andspecialists have different views and plans on how to put them into practice. In the paPef, the concePt "city attributes" is proposed, which can be classifiesinto tWo aspects: main attribute and margina1 attribute, here it mainly analyses the tWofactors that contribute the city's maopnal attribute. It is thought thatnature-geograPhical and human-cultural factors are primary besides, hierarchicalscales of cities, resource exhaustion, non-independence and defOrmity of cityfunctions are also imPortam factors. In real city fOrms, the marginal attribute thatthese various factors contribute often presents different characteristics in spatial forms.Furthermore, the paPer further explores the strategies that should be concerned andthe landscaPe-designing methods in diffeeni tyPes of cities influenced by thesefactors. In the end, it is proposed that the best way of combining the marginal attributeand the orientation of city development in the future is to build new ecological cities.Meanwhile, a new point of view on observing city problems is put forward basedon the theory of the former and the research findings from the investigations on somesmall tyPical medium-sized and small cities in Zhejiang province. Because fewprecedellts can be followed, there might be some shortcomings in some opinions.HoweveY, the paPer aims to tbrow some light on this field, and it is expected to beused fOr reference fOr city designing and ecological plarming in wider range.
