Design and fabrication of the broadband infrared antireflection coating on PbMoO4 single crystal in vacuum are explored theoretically and experimentally. On the basis of the underlying principles in the optical thin film design, by adopting the method of recursion and matrix, we get the mathematical model for the single layer antireflection coating and the multi-layer coating, which have their characteristic reflectance changes. It is shown that reflectance diagram method is a useful tool in thin film design to meet the required optical specifications. The results indicate that the two layer antireflection coating of Ta2O5/SiO2 could achieve the aim of low reflectance in the broad wave band by the optimization.Numerous experiments and a series of testing have been carried out. The results indicate that the optical performance and coating quality have been improved drastically by using ion-assisted deposition technology in the vacuum deposition, in comparison with the traditional thermal vapor deposition. The studies suggest that the antireflection coating has excellent properties as the result of film design, and will be widely used in the fiber optical communication industries.
