China has a number of rivers,lakes and reservoirs. A huge amount of sediment deposited there has caused severe problems. Dredging is one of the effective engineering measures to control floods and improve navigation. As one type of dredging equipment,a cutter suction dredger can dredge material and fill land by continually cutting soil and transporting slurry to the disposal area. It can work under a variety of dredging conditions with good benefit.Because of the complexity in underwater soil,river bed condition and dredging process of a real dredging project,dredging conditions are very often unsteady. Based on the understanding of dredging process,a mathematical model for the dynamic behavior of a cutter suction dredger during dredging is established,and the simulation system design is discussed . This paper is helpful for dredging technicians to better understand dredging process,master dredging equipment and ensure safety and efficient operation.
