Urban architecture exists in urban space, forming a competing but complementary relationship with each other. Utopian urban plan is a harmony unity of architecture and space, however, in the reality, there are many urban space filled with imperfect architecture and uncoordinated space. Fragmental Space, as a kind of negative and ineffective spatial form appearing inevitably in urban planning and implementation, is a trouble that urban planners and builders always have to face. The concept of Fragmental Space and the concept of Gap in urban planning are closely related, not only in the dimensions of history, culture, politics, economy, technology, psychology and so on, but also in their specific form of existence. Macroscopically speaking, there two ways to overcome Fragmental Space, the first is to change it into a sort of urban gap with positive psychological attributes; the second is to fill it with some specific architecture, “gapping architecture”, which is the main research object of this paper. Gapping architecture has long existed in the modern architecture history. It mainly has three forms: snail-house architecture, creative architecture and derivative architecture. As the gapping architecture is different from those urban architectures planned and designed holistically and comprehensively, but rather a kind of architecture as a supplemental, attached or repairing building, therefore, the method of designing gapping architecture is different from those general architectures. In contrast to those general architectures, gapping architectures pay more attention to the coordination and harmonization with the surrounding architectures and spaces. For the designing intention, the designers can try to fill the ineffective space from the aesthetic and practical functional angles. For the designing methods, they could learn from the relationship between the old and new architectures to carry out and implement particularly. Container architecture is a typical case of diversified design of gapping architecture.
