With the rapid development of China’s railway industry, guarantee the safety running of the railway has become a task of priority among priorities. Tamping wagon plays a major role in improving the maintenance of railway track to guarantee safety operation efficiency and train railway maintenance.This paper proposed the application of tamping wagon operation units fault status online monitoring. The proposed design works on guaranteeing tamping wagon safe running, improving working efficiency and working quantity. Firstly, the proposed paper takes attention on research background, the creative applications in mechanic fault diagnose, and the important technologies about DNCS, WSN, ZigBee, and the classic fault of tamping wagon drive units and operation units.Secondly, this paper proposes the hardware design based on TI CC2531 chip and SoC solution, which were mainly about the hardware design of processer units, home gateway, ZigBee sensor end devices.Thirdly, this paper proposes the hardware design based on Z-Stack for ZigBee wireless sensor networks in modularization software design, which mainly focuses on ZigBee sensor end devices system initialization module, RTC module, Delay processing module, Serial-Port module and ZigBee communication module. For home gateway, this paper proposes the design and implement for end devices management module.At last, basing on the real engineering consideration this paper proposes the test for battery lifetime of ZigBee sensor end devices and data package loss rate.From the results, the proposed design of the application meets the requirement and purposes. ZigBee sensor end devices realized the purpose of energy consumption, low cost and easy installation and the realization of the fault status monitoring of the tamping wagon operating units based on the wireless sensor network of star network topology.
