Industry is the product of the development of social division of labor. Areas near industrial zones first developed into big cities at the initial stage of industrial advancement, whereas the relation between industrial zones and cities has been changing during the recent decades. Owing to the urban development nd the upgrading of the industrial structure, industrial zones have to move out of the city returning the land to the city. This results in idle old industrial buildings in urban areas, and the reconstruction of these buildings has been required at the right moment. In developed countries of the west the renovation of old industrial buildings emerged in the middle of the 20th century, which provided solid theoretical basis and practical skills. Then, such reconstruction was introduced to China in 1980s.However, during the reconstruction and reuse, the problem remains that the pursuit of unique space leads to the increase of energy consumption of buildings. These buildings create a new feeling to users in terms of space, while users are bothered by high energy use and the lack of comfort. By analyzing all factors which may influence the renovation of old industrial buildings, this paper summarizes strategies and measures available to differing conditions. In addition, based on the elaboration of comfort of space influenced by climate conditions, this paper enumerates passive design strategies suitable for the space transformation. In the end, through design practice I have used some aspects of these strategies in the project design and thus drawing a conclusion that passive design strategies are also applicable to the reconstruction of old industrial buildings and provide inspiration in the process of the architectural modeling design.
