The economy of China has been growing rapidly after its opening up the domestic market, yet since then both the environment and the natural resources have become a strenuous issue. The energy consumed in cities makes up about 60% of the total comsumption over the nation, and China is urbanizing in the most tremendous speed the world ever seen, which has made the situation even more gloomy. So the need to de-carbonise our city is crucial.Recent studies have indicated that the coupling of the land use and the transportation in the cities has influenced the CO2 emission profoundly. Different transportation mode certainly leads up to distinguished CO2 emission scenario, meanwhile the transportation development strategies also need corresponding Land use patterns to maintain. For example, the Private Vehicle Oriented mode in the USA inevitably associates with low-dense unifunctional land use characteristic, and the Public Vehicle Oriented Mode in western Europe requires comparatively high-dense multifunctional land use patterns. Thus how to plan a more sustainable land use and transportation plan is worthy of study.The dissertation chooses the coupling of district transportation and land use as study object. Based on methodical studies on theories and practices relevant in Low Carbon City domain, it discusses the coupling strategies of the two factors in order to achieve low carbon emission prospect, that is a conceptive design with properly arranged lay-out and eco-friendly, energy efficient environment.Firstly the dissertation introduces the"low carbon city"theories all over the globe. Secondly it analyses the mechanism on how the coupling of both factors effects on CO2 emission. Thirdly it discusses the"low carbon"district strategies which is discoursed from four aspects, including the land usage, the compound transportation plan, the pedestrian spatial design, and the exploitation policy . Finally the essay makes good practice with the strategies , with an example of urban design along the 2nd ring road in WuHan.The purpose of the paper is to exert the catalystic effect of urban plan, to explore a low carbon, sustainable urban development pattern which can promote coordinated development of urban public transportation and district development, it also can provide a useful modle as how to develop a harmonious society.
