With the rapid development of China's economy and traffic modernization, the construction of highway is increased. During the construction of highway, more attention is paid to the highway service area because of its special geographical environment, particular function of use and close relationship with the natural environment. However, due to various objective reasons, the planning and construction of the highway service area is not synchronous with the development of the road. The highway service area not fully satisfies the requirements of the users. There are a lot of problems exists in the planning and designing of highway service area, such as the non-economy use of land, and the unreasonable architectural layout, the waste of resources and so on. Especially, the research of the highway service area is not comprehensive in our country. Many problems lack of theoretical base. The planning of the highway service area stops at the qualitative analysis which is not convincible. This requires us to make some searches into the planning and designing of the highway service area, and requires us to use green ecological ideas which are sustainable to guide the planning and designing of highway service area. All these are used to improve the service level of the highway service area.In the thesis, the Highway Service Area of Shaanxi Province is taken as an example. The research scope of this thesis is the planning and designing of highway service area under the guidance of the theory of green building. Firstly, through a great deal of information analysis and study, we analyze and summarize the relevant theories and methods about the planning and designing which exists in the green building design and evaluation system at home and abroad, and then we have some design methods and advanced technology which are relevant with this research.. Secondly, we do some researches and physical environment testing in some highway service areas in shaanxi, and we use the theory of green building to analyze it, and then we find out the problems. Then we give a corresponding design principles and methods in five areas- energy saving and energy using, water saving and water resource using, land saving and outside environment, material saving and resource using, humanization design. We use actual cases to illustrate and demonstrate them. We explore the planning and designing of the highway service area under the guidance of the theory of green building.
