With special topography and landforms, geology and hydrogeology climatic conditions, loess areas in Northern Shaanxi Province is one of the most serious damaged areas by flood in the West Region. Each year the loss caused by flood disasters is serious in flood season, restricting the regional highway construction and economic development seriously. Heavy rains and flooding caused by the heavy rains are the main hazard-formative factors of the water damage of highway in the loess area in Northern Shaanxi Province. Many types of water damage show the failures of drainage facilities as the initial characteristics of disasters development. So, setting road drainage facilities scientifically and reasonably, perfecting drainage system and improving their anti-disaster ability are the necessary measures to reduce road damaged by flood. However, due to various reasons, the existing drainage structures can not adapt the requirements in types, materials and anti-disaster ability for protection and drainage of highway in loess areas of Northern Shaanxi Province. So, researching the characteristics of water damage to propose new suitable drainage types has important engineering significance.This paper analyzes the natural environment of highway drainage system in loess region, through the field investigation of the using conditions and water damage for highway drainage systems, combined with the analysis of materials of highway drainage systems. And the types of water damage of road drainage system in Northern Shaanxi Province are classified, and furtherly the causes of the damaged by flood are analyzed.On this basis, combining with the analysis of the domestic and foreign materials, this paper sums up the new drainage types and new materials for highway drainage systems, puts forward various treatments of the inlet and outlet and the body of the rapid gutter. And through the comparison analysis of characteristics, application conditions and key points of construction for prefabricated concrete block ditch and rapid gutter, several new materials and use conditions of the drainage system are put forward. According to the characteristic of loess slope and climate condition of loess region, this paper proposes some forms of plant slope protection suitable for loess area in Northern Shaanxi Province.Combined with natural geographical conditions, new road drainage patterns and their using condition that suitable for loess area in Northern Shaanxi Province are proposed. And typical test sections in Yulin Region for adopting new type drainage facilities are chosen; the effects are analyzed and evaluated through regular observation and data analysis. Results show that new type of drainage facilities have good applicability and resistance ability to flood damage, and can be widely used in the corresponding region loess.
