Along with the development of technology, computer has applied in all field of our society the finite element analysis (FEA) of ship structures is necessary in the design and strength evaluation of ship structures. The study of the calculation method of the yielding strength in the Guide to Direct Calculation and Analysis of Bulk Carriers is carried out in this paper, meanwhile, the calculation and analysis of a ship is finished. The main contents are as follows,(1) The method of building FE modeling in MSC Patran is explained and a 72000t single side skin bulk carrier is chosen as example to build FE modeling.(2) The basic process of direct calculation and analysis of bulk carriers is discussed, which includes FE modeling of ship structures, the boundary conditions application, the loading condition determination, the load calculation and etc.(3)The loading conditions and the boundary conditions are confirmed, the design load is calculated, then the yielding strength assessment is done according to the Guide to Direct Calculation and Analysis of Bulk Carriers.(4)Through the analysis of the results of the ship, the possible problems of ship structures are found, then the ship structures are modified and strengthened.(5)Finally, a certain case is calculated in accordance with Common Structural Rules for Bulk Carriers (CSR), and the results are compared with that of the CCS Guide.
