Recently, finite element (FE) analysis of ship structures in the design of ship structures is necessary for the large scale and new type ship. But, the main ship classification societies in the world have their own direct calculation methods and strength criteria. So the International Association of Classification Society (IACS) provides common structural rules for bulk carriers and double oil tankers first, and makes the building criteria of ship uniform. The rules have taken effect on April 1st 2006. The major purpose of this paper is to research on the yielding strength and buckling assessment according to the direct analysis of Common Structural Rules for Bulk Carriers (CSR). The main contents are as follows:1) Discuss the basic process of CSR direct calculation, including FE modeling of ship structures, dealing with the boundary conditions, choosing the loading condition, calculating the load, solving, analyzing the results.2) Research on the stability theory of the buckling criteria of elementary plate panels.3) Based on the rules of CSR, make the program to load the lateral loads using Patran Command Language (PCL); make the program to adjust the bending moment and shear force of the model and to deal with the extracted stresses.4) The yielding strength and buckling assessment of 210000t single side skin bulk carrier is to be done according to CSR direct calculation.5) Through the analysis of the results of the case, research on the loading conditions of CSR and the ability of ship members affording the loads, and then find the possible problems of CSR.6) Meanwhile, compared with the calculation results of the same bulk carrier in accord with CCS rules.
