The staircase is an important component in building structure system, and its importance is not only reflected in its function but also in its power of aesthetics and emblem。Staircases have a long history and the formal languages of staircases are constantly changing over the evolution of architectural style during thousands of years of human civilization progress and such changes reflect the cultural and artistic features of diverse times and areas, which are of important historical value. With the development of society science and technology progress as well as the changes of the mode of people living and thinking, the demand for the functions and forms of staircases tends to diversity. Staircases should not only meet the demand for the basic use function of up-and-down space transportation channel but also meet people's visual and spiritual requirements. Therefore it has already not satisfied today's requirements of the architecture space design and people's aesthetic for staircases designed just based on the related design specification and the past conventional design modes.In order to meet those new requirements, we need to have a deep study of the design language of staircases and provide some theoretical foundation for the practical work of staircases design. Following the constant rising of building altitude, the use of staircases is becoming more and more widespread and the study of its formal design languages has important realistic meaning in the field of space design.Adopting the research method of literature data collection and summarizing, the paper combs the development and evolution of staircases and analyzes the relationship between staircases and space as well as lays emphasis on the study of the design conception and method of staircases to make the design languages of staircases more systematic and theoretical and offer certain help for the practical design of staircases. Setting the developmental venation of staircases as the research basement, the paper summarizes and proposes a series of methods aiming to the current and future design of staircases. The first chapter of the thesis analyses the significance of the topic, research orientations and sketches the present domestic and overseas research condition. The forth Chapter proposes concrete design procedures of staircases in terms of the conception methods and sculpturing ways. The fifth chapter predicts the trend of future staircase design boldly from the aspects of driving force of technology development and people's new lifestyle as well as the changes in thinking.the author considers that staircase design languages should advance with the times, blending with the new design concept and methods continually in order to meet the demand of high quality space. The study of this article aims to call more attention to designers concerning staircases and evoke designers to pursue a high beauty of formalism as well as pay attention to spatial details and the problems of the human-oriented.
