With the completion of a large number of viaducts, space under the viaducts also will be formed and rapidly growing to become a new land-use patterns and spatial form in city and its surrounding. Viaduct is a new three-dimensional path of the land, its affiliated space are different with the traditional two-dimensional road space. At present, there has been growing recognition that, under the viaduct space for local development, as well as residents of the far-reaching implications. On how to mitigate the possible negative impact of the viaducts, a lot of cities have different forms of solution, gained extensive experiences, rational use of space under the viaducts is one of the important methods.This article begins with the background analysis, proposed the object of study, the content and significance. Through analysis and organize the theoretical study and practice of domestic and foreign, First, defined the concept and scope of research, Analyzed the type of space and its characteristics of the space under the viaduct. Viaduct were classified respectively according to the distribution and form of viaduct a classification. A simple type of analysis on the space under the viaduct, combined with viaduct forms, architectural forms and their relationship with the location of the road under the viaduct. Proposed six characteristics of the space under the viaduct:derivative, corner, passive, public, aggregation and dynamic.This article selected HangJinQu highway, Hangzhou Ring Expressway and Downtown of Hangzhou as representative of different regions, carried out utilization research on the space under the viaduct, summarized the status of its use and its characteristics of space under the bridge, points out the problems of space under the viaduct:underutilization, no effective integration with the surrounding, chaos, lack of safety evaluation, lack of systematic management. Combined with study of theory and analysis of practical case, proposed four principles:safe utilization, overall coordination, ecological maintenance and landscape integration, and proposed land suitability classification and its application of the space under the bridge based on land use classification of urban. Finally, combined with the actual cases, respectively proposed targeted planning strategy on the different types of space under the viaduct, According to the geographic distribution of viaduct, and discussed the operation and management of space under the viaduct.
