As one kind of environmentally friendly packaging material, honeycomb paperboard is mainly used in paperboard box, pallet and cushion pad for its light weight and high specific strength and specific stiffness. However,with the constraints from the manufacturing equipment, production process, processing cost and especially the hexagonal structure defect, honeycomb paperboard applications in packagingthe field is limited with many disadvantages, such as low edgewise compressive properties, poor beginning cushioning performance and difficultly to be folded. To improve the properties of the hexagonal honeycomb paperboard, this thesis systematically studied the structural and mechanical properties of a new kind of structure: rhombic honeycomb paperboard, based on the theoretically compute, simulation analysis and experimental verification.Based on JIpycakob-Duqinhuatheory, this thesis analyzed the difference of the mechanical properties of two kinds of honeycomb paperboard, indicated the trend of paperboard performance following the change of core size and structure, and forecasted many important physics performance of rhombic honeycomb paperboard.After establishing the three-dimensional finite element model of honeycomb paperboard, the cushioning performance and stress resistance of these two kinds of paperboard are analyzed and evaluated, by using ABAQUS to simulate the real work condition when the compressions are from three directions. The simulation result shows to be compliant with the theoretically compute result.The processing of rhombic honeycomb paperboard has been discussed, and standard samples have been made under this process. The result of static compression and dynamic impact test shows that the cushioning performance and edgewise compressive properties are strongly improved following the changing the size and structure of the sandwich core, which realized the properly way of controlling the axial and transverse compression.The study has demonstrated the scientific property and feasibility of rhombic sandwich core honeycomb paperboard. Moreover, it has also established the foundation of investigating this novel structure packaging material so as to extend its applications in paperboard-box field.
