With the development of Smart Power IC and the increasing demand of the non-polluting power-saving energy, electronic ballast has been paid more and more attentions on. Compared with the traditional ballast, it has the advantages of less dissipation, less weight, no flicker, no noise and capability of ignition on the low supply voltage.Taking the project"Theoretical Research on the Key Technique and the Design for Deep-submicron Power Management IC"as the background, this paper has described the design of the XD1153, based on the principles of designing the electronic ballast and the related theory. This monolithic device is a dimming ballast control IC.XD1153 which allows the use of few small external components, simplifys the design of the fluorescent dimmable electronic ballast . This chip not only can complete half-bridge driver control, but also can achieve single-pin closed-loop lamp current dimming control. This chip which has intenal lamp non-strike protection and internal crest factor over-current protection functions prevents damaging the electronic ballast from the failure of the lamp. Meanwhile, this chip can preheat the lamp through sweeping frequency and the preheat time can be programmed, which eliminaties the requriment of external preheating control circuit.Firstly, the basic characteristics of fluorescent lamps are introduced and the requirements for electronic ballast are proposed in the paper. Secondly, the electronic ballast system and working principle of the basic framework are described. The parts of half-bridge inverter and resonant network are specially discussed. Then the key technology of electronic ballasts, such as: dimming, preheating and protection, are discussed; Finally, the system architecture of XD1153 and some main sub-circuits are introduced. The crest factor over-current protection circuit is designed particularly to avoid damage to electronic ballast from the failure of the lamp. The design and simulation of XD1153 are completed by using Cadence software based on the ultra-high voltage 0.4μm BCD process. The simulation results show that both the function and performance of the chip can meet the design requirements.
