Population, resources and environment are the world's three major issues of common concern. The conflict between global economy growth and the shortage of resources has become increasingly obvious. Saving energy, reducing pollution and recycling have become a new government's economic policy. As an important energy power, the electricity consumption of lights is roughly 15 percents of total electricity consumption. Saving the use of electricity source is not only the focus of saving-energy work, but also can reduce the emissions of SO2, CO2, NO2 and other dust and residue. Therefore, we also say that energy-saving and environment-protect lighting systems is "green lighting". Green Lighting Project, in essence, uses electronic ballasts instead of the traditional inductance ballasts. The implementation of Green Lighting Project has very important significance on optimizing resources, protecting the environment, building a harmonious society and ensuring sustainable development of China's national economy.With the advantage of no stroboscopic, no noise, high lumens coefficient, low loss, material savings, the high power factor and dimming, electronic ballast has a broad market promising. The design of electronic ballast involving in power factor correction technique, high frequency conversion technique, soft-switching technique, resonant circuit theory, filtering technology, electromagnetic compatibility technique and the pulse width modulation (PWM), or frequency modulation technique (FM), which covers most of the major power electronic technique, and also involves light source technique, is a high technological content of product. With the development of electronic technique, the power factor correction chips and power driver chips are more and more used in electronic ballast, which improve its performance and simplify its design.UV(ultraviolet) disinfection lamp, which is a kind of low-pressure mercury vapor discharge lamp, has the same working principle with common fluorescent, which are widely used in sewage treatment. The electronic ballast with dimming used in UV lamps is discussed in this article. The main contents of this article are as follows:(1) Discuss the structure and characteristic of fluorescent lamp and the working principle of electronic ballast.(2) Design an electronic ballast with unit power factor and dimming. We also have made simulation and experiment on it.
