The shift in consumer attitude and the technological evolution of the grid will be keys for the transformation of utilities business. Utilities will have to build a new technologies-based grid that can meet all these challenges. PRIME (PoweRline Intelligent Metering Evolution) is a physical and MAC layer standard definition based on the above demands and basis, in order to guarantee that future market requirements are met and that utilities'investments are rewarded. PRIME is base on OFDM multiplexing in CENELEC-A band and reaches up to 130 kbps raw data rate.This paper first describes the concept and development of power line communication, analyzes and compares several present main power line communication standards, and introduces the background, basic concepts of PRIME standard, investagates the technical schemes and parameters.The key technologies and algorithms are investagated. The concept of SFN and OFDM which is a key technology of PHY layer is introduced in detail. Then three critical modules including timing synchronization, sampling frequency synchronization, frequency domain differential modulation are studied. Forever, corresponding algorithms are also studied when SFN is applied to PRIME.Based on modeling PLC channel and equivalent SFN single transmitter channnel, a MATLAB platform of PRIME PHY layer is built, key algorithms of the baseband transmission link are simulated,compared and verified. Simulation results demonstrate the algorithms take advantage of the frame specification, the preamble and received pilots, and have good performance.FPGA implementation of the key algorithms of PRIME PHY layer is studied, selected FPGA chip and development is introduced. Finally several modules,such as timing synchronizer interleaver,sampling frequency synchronizer and DPSK demodulator, are implemented, corresponding functional results and resource utilization are presented.
