Virtual reality is a new and extremely active technology of research and application in recent years. It develops rapidly currently and has been applied in lots of fields including the petroleum industry which is very active to the application of new technology. There are some disadvantages and shortages in the traditional visual technology of oil rig which is based on three-dimensional Computer Aided Design software. Therefore, a new oil rig visual research which is based on virtual reality technology is proposed in this paper. It uses virtual reality techniques to build the three-dimensional models of drilling rig and its surrounding environment, and then a three-dimensional rig visualization environment that can give us a real field feeling and an interactive interface is established.In this paper, the modeling of oil rig in virtual reality environment, VRML model optimization, implementations of visual system and other key technologies are discussed and researched. After analyzing and comparing, Virtual Reality Modeling Language and Solidworks are established as the development tool and three-dimensional modeling software of the rig visual system, and aslo the process of extracting VRML models from Solidworks is discussed in detail. In addition, the geometric modeling, dynamic modeling and sound modeling are completed as well. The theoretical analysis to VRML files that exported by Solidworks has been carried out and we get a range of optimization process that has been proven to be definitely valid. To the problems and shortages of traditional programs such as Java Script Authoring Interface, External Authoring Interface, which develop visual system with VRML and Java, a new program of secondary development based on the VRML browser ActiveX control is proposed. Besides, the general and data relationship designs of the oil rig visual system are designed as well.The design of oil rig visual system is accomplished in the thesis. In the meanwhile, an oil rig visual software and a VRML Optimize optimization software based on Solidworks have been programmed by Visual Basic 2005. This visual system builds a three-dimensional rig virtual scene with a certain sense of reality, immersion and interaction. It is of great practical significance for training, teaching, business presentations and so on.
