With the economic and social development, humanbeings are growing concern about the survival of their own living environment. Human Settlements is a basis of human survival and development, and the concentrated expression of human civilization.Topography, climate, hydrology and vegetation have a profound impact on the quality of living environment, and are the important factors of living environment suitability.we extracted the RDLS in Hunan Province base on grid-scale extraction (1 km×1km) by using GIS & RS technology and the window analysis method; and analysised the regular pattern for distribution of the RDLS in Hunan Province from structure, distribution and height aspects; studied the regular pattern for distribution of climate, hydrology and vegetation in Hunan province by using correlation analysis and regression analysis method. And we comprehensively assessed the suitability of human settalments in Hunan province by integrating the RDLS, climate index, hydrological index and vegetation index and population distribution, with the Human settlemants suitability assessment method and HEI model by combinating single and multi-factors.Good human settlements are important factors to human race. The study results are consistent with the regular pattern population distribution of Hunan province. The population apparently concentrated on the areas which are in the high level of suitabiliy degree of human settalments. The Suitability degree of human settlments is high in the north and east in Hunan and it is low in the southwest in Hunan. At last,we proposed optimizing suggestion for the sustainable development of Hunan human settlments based on the study achievments.
