With the development of our society, the big and high precise gears have been widely used in many important departments such as communication, energy sources, metallurgy, national defense and so on. And the technology of big gears'high precise measurement has been greatly needed to improve. But there are not many convenient instruments used for the measurement of big gears at home, and it is very expensive to import the measurement instruments from abroad. So it's high time to develop the instruments for the measurement of big gears by ourselves.The possibility of on-machine measuring apparatus and the on-machine measurement technology of big gears have been researched under the condition of lab. The project of control module and software module has also been researched. The measurement method of big gears has been researched based on the characteristics of big gears. There are much more differences in measurement method between big gears and common gears because the big gears'diameter and weight are too big, for example, the diameter of big gear is about two to five meters. And it also brings us many problems during the measurement, for example, the size of measuring instrument is big, and it is very difficult to fix measuring instrument on the big gear. Because of these problems, the method of on-machine measurement has been applied, which can make full use of existing equipments and also be able to overcome the deficiency of traditional measuring methods. So this method can greatly reduce the cost of measuring instrument.The whole designing project of the instrument has been greatly researched. The project consists of movement controlling, signal processing, data acquisition and software designing. On the part of the whole measurement project designing the measurement method has been introduced and the problems during measurement have been analyzed in theory, such as the unification of coordinates during measurement and the position error compensation. On the part of movement controlling GT-400 movement control system of Googol Technology Company has been used to control the movement of server motors. The signal acquired from sensor has been processed by signal processing board to get the useful signal, and then the useful signal has been sent to data acquisition system. And ADuC812 of AD Company has been used in data acquisition system. Borland C++ Builder6 has been adopted to develop upper computer interface, and the data of lower computer has been collected to send to upper computer through serial interface. And the movement controlling orders have been sent to the lower computer by the upper computer through serial interface. The error assessment, measurement results display and the reports print have been realized in the upper computer.The possibility of on-machine gear shape error of big gears has not only been demonstrated, a new method of other parameters of big gears measuring has also been put forward.
