There are great advances in China's contemporary furniture design field: the furniture products are abundant; the professional designer's team strengthening; design move towards specialization gradually; design education develops rapidly; the design competition begins to hold; the exhibition of the furniture is more and more internationalized. But there are a lot of questions in furniture design: there is a lot of imitative phenomenon in the design; the recognition of design is not thorough; design philosophy is fuzzy; design management backwards; it is poor to design culture; there is little input to design. We should seek to suit the road to our country's contemporary furniture design which combining the reality of designing. The furniture is the industrial product which reflects materials and spiritual culture. It is one of the ways to construct theoretical system of modern furniture with Chinese characteristics that combine the functionalism thought with China's contemporary furniture design.This text analyses the "functionalism "in the industry design at first. Then we analyzed the origin and development of the design philosophy of the functionalism and discussed the essence and limitation of the design philosophy of the functionalism. This thesis is analyses to the concrete case with characteristic of typical functionalism and summarizes the characteristic of functionalism. The characteristic of the design philosophy of the functionalism includes two meaning: characteristic of the design philosophy of the functionalism and products characteristic under the guidance of the design philosophy of the functionalism. The characteristic of design philosophy of the functionalism are the rational design idea, the consciousness of serving the people, and realizing technology correctly and democratic thought and national characteristic. The product characteristics under the guidance of the design philosophy of the functionalism are the function is the highest, proper ornament, standardization and produce in a large amount. We combine current situation and development trend of China contemporary furniture design with characteristic of functionalism of design philosophy.
