Construction Of A Web-based Information System Of China's Woody Plants List (chinese-latin-english)

China is a large country with a vast territory, complex topography and climate, and extremely rich in plant species. Global sharing of plant information resources is the inevitable trend of development of forestry. Currently, there is a wide variety of plant database developed in China.. However,the functions of domestic plant information system,such as browsing and query, are still not powerful enough. At present, there is no woody plants database for three languages (Chinese, Latin and English) in China. However, we often need to know the standardized plant names in Latin and English. So, it's necessary to develop a Chinese woody plants database system in Chinese-Latin-English. And it will benefit the sharing and exchange of global plant information resources.This paper studied the development of Chinese woody plants information system. It collected and collated the plant names and the classification information of Chinese woody plants in three languses (Chinese, Latin and English), which mainly made reference to《A list of the Woody Plants of China in Chinese-Latin-English》,《New plait of the plant names in Chinese-Latin-English》and Integrated Taxonomic Information System(ITIS) according to the recommendations of botanists, and developped the information system with Dreamweaver,SQL Server and ASP technology.The main conclusions of this paper were as following:(1) The database of China's woody plants list in Chinese-Latin-English has been constructed, which containing 180 families, 1288 genera, 16028 species (including subspecies, varietas,,forma, and cultivated plants). The database can provide the plant names and taxonomic information of China's woody plants in three languages(Chinese, Latin and English).(2) The information system of China's woody plants list in Chinese-Latin-English has been developed, which had the functions of Real-time browsing, query and administration. There are several ways to search for information, which including keyword search, joint drop-down search of family and genus and quick search for plant names sorted by the first letter. In the administration section, administrator can add, modify, delete or audit data according to different administrative privileges. The system has been running smoothly after testing and achieved a network share, which can be accessed at:http://www.forestrysci.gov.cn:8001/index.asp(3) The database has been converted into TBF database format and published in "China's Forestry Information Network". The users can view plant information through the taxonomic tree of plants via Internet. Furthermore, the plant details such as plant morphology and pictures can be accessed through hyperlink.
