REST, a new way to build Web systems and Web Services, is proposed as the architectural style for the World Wide Web. With this the Web Services could be developed, deployed and invoked just like the way of Web itself. Nowadays most of the available solutions for geospatial data sharing and interoperability require the huge and complex service-oriented architecture. It is too difficult for most of the geospatial science research teams to deploy and manage the systems. The high scalability and simple deployment of Web Services which REST promises are particularly suitable for geospatial information application.First of all, the author does research on the basic concept and related technology of REST and RESTful Web Services, and makes a concrete analysis of the existing standards for the geospatial information services to abstracts the resources and interfaces. And then the RESTful geospatial information services are built by means of integrating the resources and interfaces.Secondly, the design of WebGIS based on the RESTful geospatial information services is discussed. A four-tier architecture which is formed through adding a resource abstract layer on the traditional three-tier Web structure is designed to divide all components from each other and makes a low coupling, high cohesion system. At the same time the author focuses on the security and caching issues in order to meet the actual requirement of the production environment. Finally, a resource-oriented WebGIS prototype system for land management is developed. It is shown through the tests that the geospatial information services based on REST style simplifies creating, deploying and invoking a service so as to give a clear structure of a Web system of high scalability and easy-to-use.The research findings in this paper can be used for reference for developing the geospatial information services and establishing a WebGIS based on the geospatial services.
