The distribution of expansive rock and soil in China is very wide, according to relevant information, about more than 20 provinces and cities have different levels of distribution, expansive rock and soil has the nature of water-swelling, dehydration shrinkage and back and forth deformation, so it will cause serious damage to the engineering construction and applications of the local construction, water conservancy, railway, highway and so on., resulting in huge loss of life and property. With the rapidly development of China's national economy, the scale and scope of geotechnical engineering activities in areas full of expansion rock and soil have increased rapidly which is inseparable from the modern management expansive rock and soil data. However, adapting traditional paper-based documents to manage expansive rock and soil has been far from satisfying the requirements of managers, because this way can not update, manage and utilize the information effectively and timely, resulting in information's incompletion and outmoding. At the same time, unique and special needs of expansion rock and soil for different works become increasingly evident that traditional information management methods can not meet the higher and higher engineering needs. Information is the trend for world's economic and social development. Combining the expansive rock and soil information management with information technology and using information technology to improve data management level and efficiency is the general trend.Geographical Information System (GIS) has the advantage of convenient and powerful data management capabilities and friendly man-machine interaction environment. Therefore, this article used the development environment combining object-oriented development languages (Visual Basic) and the GIS component technology (MapX). MapInfo Professional 8.0 was adapted as a tool to establish and process spatial geographic information, and Visual Basic 6.0 was used as a tool to develop system user interface development and calculate module programming, and Access 2000 was used to develop and manage the property database, as well as Geographic Information System map control MapInfo MapX 5.0 as the map display control of the system, the system computing model and geographic information systems have been embedded tightly integrated through Component technology, and initially formed the GIS-based expansive rock and soil information system. In order to meet the needs, spatial database and attribute database of expansive rock and soil information system was analyzed and established, and databases were preliminarily optimized and linked. The system achieved the functions of browsing and editing, information query, data management and spatial analysis of expansive rock and soil distribution maps, with the feature of intuitive, rapid visualization. Thus basis were provided for project construction management and disaster prevention and warning decisions of expansive rock and soil.
