Hainan Island is situated in the South China Sea, separated from Leizhou Peninsula by a narrow strait, covering the longitude from 108°36'43"E to 111°2'31"E and the latitude 18°10'04"N to 20°9'40"N. Hainan Island covers an area of 33,920 square kilometers, being the second largest island which is smaller than Taiwan. The whole area of Hainan Island is situated in the tropical areas and it possess 42.4 per centum of the tropical areas in China. The Island enjoys the rich biodiversity of fauna and flora, so as to microbal flora, especially in lichens. The research of foliicolous lichens from the region will supply the lichens recourse and enrich the biodiversity to the Hainan Island. The present studies are based on the materials collected by the author and other collectors, which are conserved in the Herbarium Mycologicum Academiae Sinicae - Lichenes (HMAS-L). The examination for the genera is made through the morphology, anatomy, chemistry, geography and ecology on the basis of the comprehensive concept. Twenty one species of foliicolous lichens belonging to the following eleven genera, eight families, in these species, a species is a new to science and nine species are reported as new records from China. The new specie is Enterographa hainanensis B. Gao & J.C. Wei, sp. Nov; the new records are Bacidia galbinea (Kremp.) Zahlbr., Byssoloma discordans (Vain.) Zahlbr., Dimerella minima (Müll. Arg.) R. Sant., Fellhanera submicromata (V?zda.) Lücking & Kalb, Gyalideopsis vulgaris (Müll. Arg.) Lücking, Opegrapha vegae R. Sant., O. viridistellata Sérus., Lücking & Sparrius, Parmelia sp., Porina octomera (Müll. Arg.) Shilling. Each species are amply described by the author on the basis of the comprehensive concept. The keys to the genera and species are presented and the photos of all species to show their habits and microscopic structure of asci and ascospores are also given in the thesis. The data and information gained from this study should be helpful to the further systematic research of foliicolous lichens. The preliminary study will provide a data for the biodiversity and the use of biological resources of Hainan Island, and redound to the compilation of the Lichen Flora to China.
