Coastal zone is the main active domain where people live and develop. The area near the coastline is the forefront part of the coastal zone which is affected by both natural and human activity. Coastal zone becomes the key area in environmental monitoring, because of its complicity, sensitivity, and variability,.In the present paper, the coastal zone in Liaoning Province is taken as a case study; the integration of RS and GIS is used as the main technical tools, the multi-temporal remote sensing image data, historical topographic maps, hydrological and other statistical data were applied as the source of information. The paper is focused to study the evolution of the coastline of Liaoning Province for the latest century. The main contents and results of the paper are as the followings:(1) Determined the interpretation signs of different kinds of coast on satellite images according to coastal geomorphologic features of respective types and to obtain the extraction of the coastline by combining artificial visual with automatic extraction of interactive interpretation. Corrected the muddy soft slope of the coast manually based on the automatic extraction of the instantaneous water line in order to eliminate the effect of the tidal level on remote sensing images.(2) Gained the changing data of different parts of the coastline of Liaoning Province in a century or three decades. The result of the change analyzing shows that the coastal line diversified in different section. The muddy SPOT in the north of Liaodong Bay change the most, then the muddy SPOT from the estuary of Dayang river to the estuary of Yalu River and the SPOT around Changxing Island, the bedrock coast near Dalian change the least.(3) Coastline evolution of different periods of time poses a different driving force. The muddy coastline in the north of Liaodong Bay changed dramatically for a century with the shore mainly silting up. The process of change can be divided into three phases according to the characteristics of different periods of time: 1909-1950, the coastline changes mainly for natural causes in this phase; 1950-1980, the coastline change is controlled by the dual-factor effect of natural and human activities in this stage; 1980-now, the effect of human activities become the governing factor for the coastline changes in this period.studying coastline change of Liaoning Province in last century and analyzing driving force, could make we know temporal and spatial characteristics of coastline and change rules, also apply science evidence for the sustainable development of coastal zone economy .
