This study takes Fuzhou basin as a study area to approach a new geomorphologic mapping method based on ASTER image. The research steps are as follows: Firstly, extracts DEM of the study area from the ASTER image and makes some morphometric maps of the study area with the DEM, such as the elevation map, relief degree map, slope map, hillshade map, three-dimension map, contour map, terrain section plane and so on. Then, has a causing division of geomorphologic types with the data of the visible light band and shortwave infrared band of the ASTER image. Finally, processes the geomorphologic information both on shape and cause using the function of "overlay" and "spatial join" in ArcGIS software environment, and makes the process modelized. Based on the research achievement of traditional geomorphologic mapping, the whole operation integrates GIS, RS, geomorphology and mapping together, and the certain geomorphic type information in the study area can be interpreted only by putting the ASTER image. This method may reduce unnecessary field survey as much as possible and accomplish geomorphologic mapping in much short time.
