Geomorphology is one of the most important components of physical geographyenvironment, and it controls the distribution and change of other ecology and environmentfactors in some extent. Like maps which are regarded as the Second language of geography,the geomorphologic maps play the important roles in agriculture production, ecologyenvironmental protection and construction of national defense etc.. Traditionalgeomorphologic mapping method mainly depends on handwork and field surveying,usually, geomorphologic mapping information came from large-scale topographic maps,then the transition map was finished by means of mapping synthesis, and additionalvarious mapping contents were complemented. Especially, in areas of undefinitegeomorphologic boundary, field surveying could help get lots of landform information.This mapping method had more data precision, but it needed enormous human work, andlong mapping time. Therefore, this method does not satisfy the needs of information age.With the rapid development of the RS and GIS, more and more geomorphologic types,mapping can be gotten and finished by means of the Remote Sensing data in the indoor inshorter time nowadays. So, with the development of the geomorphologic mapping of1:1,000,000 in China in new time, it is necessary to grope for a new kind of numeralgeomorphologic mapping method. Therefore, this research takes ChangBai Mountain as key area to get one newgeomorphologic mapping method based on Remote Sensing and DEM, and it can establishthe foundation for accomplishing nationwide geomorphologic mapping of 1:1,000,000 inChina. The base data of the research includes the historic geomorphologic maps, DEM of1:250,000 and ETM images (combination with 7,4, 2 bands) in 2000. The mapping methodchiefly is: (1) using the DEM to show the topographic characteristics by counting theelevation, relief amplitude, gradient, hillshade and three-dimension of Changbai Mountain;(2) getting the geomorphologic boundary from the historic geomorphologic map as thequalitative; (3) using the remote sensing image's characteristics such as hue and veins asquantitative indicator, all of the operation can be finished in the same ArcGIS software.This method integrates Geographical Information System (GIS), Geomorphology andmapping to attain geomorphologic type boundary of study area. This method not onlyinherits the research achievement of traditional geomorphologic mapping, but also bringsinto play the importance of DEM and Remote Sensing. Its purpose is to deeply dig thegeomorphologic characteristics, which hide in Remote Sensing images by using physicalgeography knowledge and other auxiliary dates, to reduce unnecessary traditional fieldsurveying, to accomplish geomorphologic mapping in shorter time. Therefore, the methodnot only can improve work efficiency of geomorphologic mapping, but also reduce thelabor intensity of the researchers, and realize the digitization and informationization ofgeomorphologic maps.
