GPS mobile terminal which is based on the principle of Global Positioning System (GPS), not only can help field worker in map mapping and field surveying, but also can provide convenience in the activities such as mountaineering exploration, traveling and so on. In the intelligent traffic filed, carries on the monitoring and routing using the GPS mobile terminal to the vehicles and ships can effectively avoid the accidents and enhance the traffic efficiency simultaneously.At present, Single-function GPS equipment has already been developed maturely, multi-function GPS equipment gradually becomes the market newly to favor. According to the market investigation, the structure of GPS Multi-function Handheld Terminal which is based on ARM9 MCU and embedded Linux is developed.The GPS Multi-function Handheld Terminal uses 5.7 inches TFT LCD as the output device, the resistance type touch screen as the input device which are easy to use. The GPS Multi-function Handheld Terminal can be kept on-line for a long time by using an ultra large capacity lithium-ion polymer battery. The GPS Multi-function Handheld Terminal can also be used in vehicle. Except position fixing and navigation, GPS Multi-function Handheld Terminal also supports several new digital functions like sound recording, multi-angles photograph, multi-media broadcast, mass storage and so on. Combining with monitoring centre and technology of GPS, GIS and GPRS, the handheld terminal can be able to realize long-distance supervising, routing and field surveying.The terminal design plan in this paper integrates the GPS technology used in vehicle, field surveying and PDA. At the same time, the terminal combines the function of common information network, handheld terminal, electronic map and monitoring centre to realize RS, GIS, GPS and GPRS integrative product and 4S integrative multi-function GPS terminal product.At first, the thesis introduces the structure of mobile target monitor information system. Secondly, the hardware design of GPS multi-function handheld terminal and the single-chip GPS receiver module are expatiated detailedly, and then the transporting of the embedded Linux operating system in GPS multi-function handheld terminal as well as the Linux device driver design are discussed. Finally the thesis introduces the application software design of the GPS multi-function handheld terminal and the monitoring centre.
