The embedded system is defined by IEEE as devices used to control, monitor, or assist the operation of equipment, machinery or plant. It centers on application, bases on computer technology and can be modified as using. It can be used in special computer system of have a strong function, such as reliabity, volume, cost, power. Along with the development of the information, the network and the intelligence, the embedded technology is improved fast. Because of its stability, open-source, easy-porting and other strongpoint, linux is widely used in embedded field and has huge potential and value in commerce.The GPS navigation technology is new in modem information and communication domains. Now the GPS is mainly used in engineering testing and vehicle navigation. but it is used in personal application very little. So if someone develop it, the future of it is beautifull.Accordingly the development of the embedded systems leads to the popularity of microprocessors. The ARM architecture has established itself as one of the leading microprocessors. Nowadays most of these microconductor foundries produce the microprocessors based on ARM architecture. Its simple design founded in RISC principles yet balanced by CISC influence leads to low cost/power cores which offer high performance.The thesis mainly researches the handheld GPS system project based on ARM and embedded linux. The handheld GPS system includes the handheld GPS hardware system and the handheld GPS software system. This paper researches the handheld GPS hardware system including main microprocessors,memory circuit,power circuit,SD card circuit,the connection circuit of GPS model with antenna,USB circuit,the LCD touchscreen circuit. Meantime, the design of the handheld GPS software system including porting theⅥⅥbootloader,porting linux operating system,building the file system,building the GPS GUI is done. The handheld GPS navigation terminal through serial port gets data from GPS satellites, then put the navigation information to the display terminal. the author through analyzing and studing the embedded system, explains and summarizes the process of bootloader and how to port a bootloader. And the author expatiates the method of porting the linux kernel related to ARM. Next, the author introduces the types of the file system and how to build a linux file system. At last the author introduces the design of the GUI based on MiniGUI.
