As a tool to manage and analyze spatial data, GIS has demonstrated broad prospect for appliance in many fields. However, when planning the logging, many uncertainties caused by the ecological features of the forest itself should not be neglected. Forest logging activities is based on deforestation planning. Therefore, to design a scientific deforestation plan, we need to not olny have an accurate understanding of the stand growth situation but also harmonize the relationship between environment protection, production and business operations so that the negative influence caused by logging activities on the ecological system in forest area can be minimised. Based on the argument above, the issues of how to choose and use a better operation method and a Stand Growth Model, how to manage various data in a more effective way and how to analyse and graph the spatial data should be taken into consideration when we are designing ecological deforestaion plan.This thesis takes Jingouling Forest Farm of Wangqing Forest Bureau as a research object. It discusses about how to use the GIS to assist the Logging planning design by processing both special data and forest attribute data. Firstly, build a terrain processing model for study area, and generate the thematic layers we need. Then, use the Control Method and Stand Growth Model as a base to predict stand variables. By using VB to build the "Control Method Query" tool and "the Natural Forest Growth Model Predicting" tool to identify the forest type, the logging diameter, the logging volume, and the future stand stock. Lastly, the "logging area choosing through control method" model is build to finalize the final bound of the logging area, and give some basic advises about the potential wood depot sites. This research has also settled some problems about GIS data updating and how to evaluat the effects to the forest growth caused by the geographical factors, so as to assist the logging design indirectely .In order to build the model which can meet our requirements, on the basis of the former researches, methods, and the standards of the logging planning, we choose and predict and evaluat the idexies related to the logging planning design. Through the visual Model Building window, a series of spatial analysing and processing tools in ArcToobox and custom tools are combined to form ordered processing steps and automatically running process, which can be shared and display the result visually so as to assist the ecological logging planning.
