Taking coastal zone in Tianjin Binhai New Area as the study area, on the basis of extensive data collection such as TM, land use condition data of Tianjin Binhai NewArea, soil data and social economy data, we extracted the land use and land cover information of June 15, 1993 and May 12, 2001 using much information-based gradually remote sensing classification.Then the land use and land cover change during this period was analyed. Finally, we studied the driving force of land use and land cover change in the coastal zone of Tianjin Binhai New Area by methods of qualitative analysis, statistical analysis.After geometric rectification, location, enhancement, and the compilation, rectification of the land use map and other assistant map, we did the classification. Firstly, we established the land use and land cover remote sensing classified system. Then we analyzed the spectrum characteristics of every types carefully, and several models were developed. We classificated the two images by several models and assistant map.After precision evaluation, we found the much informations-based gradually remote senting classification was appropriate in extracting the land use and land cover information in the coastal zone of Tianjin Binhai New Area. This classification method could overcome the shortcomings of time and energy consuming in visual interpretation and the poor precision in the supervised and non-supervised classificaion and had the characteristic of time saved and high precision. After person's revising, the precision of the classification had reached 87%.We adopted the post classification comparison method to study the land use and land cover change. After calculating the transfer matrix of every types, analyzing its area change and structure, we found that the types with large area such as reservoir and river, salt field had poor stability and had frequent transformation, which was the main land use and cover change in the coastal zone of Tianjin Binhai New Area.
