Land use/land cover change (LUCC) play an important role in global environmental change and sustainable development. Remote sensing as the modern technology and with the advantages such as quick, dynamic and large-area covering has become an important means in monitoring land use/cover change. The objective of this paper is to extract the information of land use/cover change (1988~2003) in Jinhua city and analysis of driving forces by using Landsat TM/ETM satellite images. In this study, two TM images (1988~1996) and one ETM image (2003) of the study area were used. After imagery pre-processing, which included atmospheric correction, geometric correction and images enhancing, the technology of decision tree classification was presented to extract the land use/cover change information. Compared with maximum likelihood classification (MLC), the extraction method of decision tree classification could eliminate the influence of spectral confusion between-class and spectral variation within-class on the farmland, orchard, woodland and residential land, unused land, thus the accuracy of decision tree classification was also higher than that of MLC. Some mathematic models are used to research the spatio-temporal changes of land use /cover during the 15 years in Jinhua city, such as land use dynamic degree model, land use degree model and land use type transferring matrix model. At last, using related social economic statistical data that we collected, the driving forces were analyzed based on the analysis of land use/cover change.Through this study, the conclusions were drew as follows:(1) By using decision tree classification, the information of land use/cover in Jinhua from 1988 to 2003 was acquired. And the overall accuracy of decision tree, MLC were 91.41%, 81.64 %, respectively.(2) With the help of area transfer matrix of land use/cover change, the interactive transfer relation of six types land use/cover was also analyzed. The results of the research show that the area of farmland, unused land has been decreased; the area of residential land, orchard, woodland, water-body has increased in totally. The increased area of residential land was mainly transferred from farmland, unused land, and farmland did the most important contribution to its expansion. During the 15 years, the farmland area change maximally, it decreased 29.52% from 103476.24 hm~2 in 1988 to 72926.73 hm~2 in 2003.(3) By using the singular and synthetical land use dynamic degree model, the dynamic change of land use /cover was analyzed. The research indicated that orchard and residential land change fastly, and the change speed takes on fast at prophase and slow at anaphase. The synthetical land use dynamic degree between prophase and anaphase were 1.60% and 1.74%, respectively. The results prove that human activities are influencing more on it.(4) Combining related social economic statistical data, the main driving forces were analyzed. The results show that: the main driving forces of farmland change of Jinhua city are the speed of development of GDP, the first industry, the total population and the agriculture, forest, pasture and fishery output values. Therefore, it is mainly the economic development and population that caused the change of land use/cover, especially for the farmland.
