This study deals with butterfly diversity and conservation of rare as well as insect fauna species in Baishuijiang Natural Reserve in Gansu Province. The research includes field investigation, observation at certain time and places, captive breeding in experimental area etc. Butterfly species diversity in Baishuijiang Natural Reserve and variation regulation of butterfly diversity in different areas are studied. The relationof butterfly diversity with environmental factors such as vegetation destruction, human disturbance are strenthened in Bifeng Gully. The biology of two rare butterfly species is studied. Meanwhile, this study deals with insect α-diversity and β-diversity in Baishuijiang Natural Reserve and inquire into the mechanisms of ecological control by protecting and recovering vegetation. The research includes field capture with sweeping net, light trap, transect investigation. Conservation measures are provided. 1,Biology of two rare butterflies 1)Papilio alcmenor:Bivoltine. Overwintering in pupa on shrub or tree branch. Eclosion is in early April of next year. The larva period is 25-35 days with five instars. Larva feeds on Citrus spp. 2)Papilio paris:Bivoltine. Overwintering in pupa on shrub or tree branch. Eclosion is in late March of next year. The adults prefer white flower plants and Larva feeds on Citrus spp. and Toddalia asiatica. 2,Butterfly diversity : There are 514 butterfly species in Baishuijiang Natural Reserve belonging to 12 families and 217 genera, of which 51 species are endemic species of china, 9.92% of the total. 10 species are national protected species. Most species are in buffer zone. Shannon-wiener index, F-index, G-index are the highest in this area. Species index, F-index, G-index are about equal in experiment zone and core zone. There are more Pieridae and Nymphalidae species in experiment zone. But more Papolionidae species and more rare species in core zone. 3,Insect diversity at Bifeng Vally of Baishuijiang Natural Reserve:At the end of Bifeng Valley, the plant species are very abundant, the rate of recover is higher, the human disturbance is less, which give an excellent environment and abundant food for insects. At this area, insect species of light-trapped are most abundant, insect community component and structure is most complex. Both the pest species and the natural enemies are rich. Therefore, it has a high species abundance and diversity. At the area where has much more human disturbance, species of both plants and natural enemies are less but more individuals. From above analysis, it shows that higher species diversity, stronger natural adjusting and controling ability maintain ecological balance between species, and it is not easy for the pests to reach a bigger number...
