Soil erosion is defined as the course of destroying, denudating, moving and depositing of soil and other substances on the ground, under the actions of hydraulic forces, wind, gravity and freeze-thaw. Soil erosion, which directly causes the loss of surface soil and water, is the main target of land improvement in China. As the main reason of soil and water loss, soil erosion is accelerated by irrational land-use. By using geographical information system (GIS) and remote sensing (RS), the soil erosion classification can be matched with the certain plot in spatial for analyzing the relations between erosion intensity and land use, which, holding the characteristics of soil erosion on the whole, offers a reliable basis for scientific decision-making.The main erosion patterns in the north of Hebei province are wind-erosion and hydra-erosion .In this paper, the soil erosion grading system is constructed on the base of the Grading Standard of Soil Erosion issued by the Ministry of Water Resources (1997) and the Hierarchical Index System (Li YuBao, 2000). And by using geographical information system (GIS) and remote sensing (RS), the information such as land use, slope, coverage of plant, soil quantity is collected, which is further overlaid to realize the erosion intensity classification map in the north of Hebei province in accordance with the established index system. Furthermore, the map is overlaid with the soil erosion intensity map for the investigation of the soil erosion status under different patterns of land use.Study shows that the area affected by erosion (slight or above level) is 4,165,275 hectares, rated 56.41%, among which, the erosion area of mid-level and above intensity is 1548641 hectares, rated 20.98%. This area has become the region of severe land degradation. For various intensities of soil erosion, the characteristics of land use are different .In the areas of hydra-erosion: on minimal and slight level, the forest are the largest, accounted as 49.15% and 51.32%;on the mid-level ,the grass land with the largest proportion of 39%, and the cultivated land accounts for 31.60%, the second; on the high-level, highest-level and...
