This work mainly studies the application of a kind of polymer gradient refractive index (GRIN) micro-sphere-lens fabricated by suspension diffusion co-polymerization method on retro-reflection materials. GRIN micro-sphere is a new-type optical element, its optical function is mainly achieved by the inhomogeneous reflective index distribution of the medium. It has such advantages - simple geometric shape, small volume, short optical path, lightness in weight, easiness in producing by wholesale, etc. It has great potentialities in such fields as micro-optics, integrated optics and optics communication.First, we introduced the concept of retro-reflection and the recent situation of the retro-reflection materials, then analyzed the feasibility of application of GRIN polymer micro-spheres. Furthermore two suitable monomers were chosen to produce such kind of GRIN polymer micro-spheres by suspension diffusion co-polymerization method. Next, the refractive index distribution curve and other optic parameters of the micro-lens were measured. On the basis of that, according to basic theory of spherical symmetry GRIN optics and the rigorous computation of light tracking, its effect on retro-reflection was estimated. Finally, by optimized computation the best technical parameters were obtained and the direction of improve its retro-reflection effect was determined.Chapter 1 and chapter 2 simply introduced the concept of retro-reflection, retro-reflection materials, the fabrication of traditional glass sphere and the possibility of the application of GRIN polymer micro-sphere on retro-reflection. In chapter 3, on the basis of the introduction of spherical GRIN basic theory, the retro-reflection effect of a micro-lens with ideal GRIN distribution was analyzed. In Chapter 4:firstly, elaborate the theory of making polymer GRIN micro-lens by means of suspension-diffusion-copolymerization; secondly, introduce themeasurement of the common optics parameter of the medium lens, for example, light passing index, non-sphericity and so on. In chapter 5, based on the measured refractive index distribution curve, according as the theoretical model of light transmission in the GRIN medium, using quadrivalent Runger-Kutta method to carry out the light tracking, we studied retro-reflection of GRIN polymer micro-sphere and its application and concluded the best conditions to get good results. In chapter 6 we analyzed the two ways to improve the retro-reflection effect of GRIN polymer micro-sphere using the light tracking and discuss the pleasant results we got. In the last chapter the advantages and disadvantages of the application of GRIN polymer micro-sphere on retro-reflection were analyzed and we have some aspects to be approved in the future.
