In the plant kingdom, bryophytes are recognized as organisms occupying habitats between the aquatic and terrestrial living conditions. Recently, with the exception of the ocean and land above 5000 meters altitude bryophytes can be found worldwide, including the Antarctica.Hebei Province is situated in the north of China and the east part of Eurasia. It lies at 36 05'-42 37'N and 113 11-119 45'E, covering an area of 190379km2. Its northwest belongs to the temperate continental monsoon climate, and the rest of this region belongs to the warm temperate continental monsoon climate. The regional vegetation is mainly fallen broad-leaved forest, being mixed up with fallen and evergreen coniferous forest. In addition, its northwest has temperate grassland.Hebei Province complicated terrain and its features breed rich plant diversity. Many botanists have made much of the seed plant in this district. However, about the research of bryophytes, people only reported fragmentarily before. In fact, the systematic research on bryoflora in Hebei should trace back to 1995. From then on, Professor J. C. Zhao and colleagues have been investigating and collecting bryophytes in this district, some study results on the bryoflora of Hebei having been published one after another. This thesis taking the lead in systematically studying pleurocarpous mosses, is a part of the comprehensive research of bryophytes in Hebei, which will provide datum for the statistics and analysis of bryophytes along with exploit and utility of plant resources in Hebei, which will provide the first-hand material for the compilation of the ((Flora bryophytarum Hebeiensis)) and the ((Flora bryophytarum Sinicorum)) .On classification system, the author references the classification systems about bryophytes and approves standpoint of Vitt., considering that the place of capsule growing is the criterion of distinguishing acrocarpous and pleurocarpous mosses. The acrocarpous group includes the mosses capsule growing from the apex of branch or stem. It is from Hdwigiaceae to Hylocomiaceae. With bigger body, this group can preserve water and soil in forest ecological system and be favored double by horticulturist. Among them, some species are indicating plants for pollution, some have natural chemical materials that can resist bacteria and virus. They have promising exploit prospect. The thesis is principally based on the investigation, collection of the specimens and the identification of more than 5000 packages of pleurocarpous mosses collected by us in Hebei Province from 1995 to 2001. 17 families, 66 genera and 196 species (including subspecies and varieties) have been discovered. Among them, one genus, Mittenothamnium Henn., and 5 species, Leskea australis Sharp in Grout, Amblystegiwn calcarewn (Kanda)Nog. , Brachythecium pseudo-uematsui (Broth.) Nog., Pylaisiella intricate (Hedw.) Grout andMittenothamnium diminutivwn (Hampe) E. G. Britt., are firstly recorded in China; 1 family, 10 genera and 54 species are newly reported from Hebei. The studying method of flora adopted by this thesis are follows: the statistics of the dominant families and genera, along with single families and genera, Abundance Index(AI), Similarity Coefficient of Genus(SCG), Floristic Spectrum Analysis (FSA), Principal Components Analysis(PCA), as well as Agglomerative Classification Analysis(ACA).According to these specimens, a key of families, genera and species about the pleurocarpous mosses in Hebei have been worked out, and some dissecting graphs have been pictured. Moreover, the Chinese name, Latin science name, major reference literatures, collected sites, collecting men and specimen numbers, as well as geographical elements and distribution of every species, have been narrated explicitly. The pleurocarous moss-flora in Hebei is subordinate to 9 geographical elements. North temperate elements take the leading position, including 98 species, approximating to one half of all species in Hebei. Contrast to the North temperature elements, the tropical elements is rare.
