The morphology of the mechanical receptor organs in fore-, mid-, and hindlegs of male and female adults Tachycines hoffmanni (Raphidophoridae) were comparatively studied with Spurr's embedding method. For light microscopic analysis, serial (transverse and longitudinal)sections were cut at 5m and selected parts of the transverse sections were scale drawed and photographed. In order to research the morphological structure of the tibial organs comparatively the tris-dimensional sizes of the structure were measured. The external morphology of prothoracic, mesothoracic and metothoracic spiracles and the proximal parts of all the tibiae were investigated by the use of a scanning electron microscope (SEM) .In each leg the tibial organs of T. hoffmanni are located in the proximal tibia about 1mm distally to the genual joint . They consist of two scolopale organs: the subgenual organ and the intermediate organ . No structures resembling the crista acoustica of tettigoniids or the tracheal organ of gryllids are present. The overall morphology and the number of scolopidia in the two scolopale organs are very similar in each leg, while the structures in the hindleg are slightly larger. The subgenual organ is fan-shaped and is built up by 30 +1, 28 ?1, 28 +1 scolopidia in fore-, mid-,and hindleg tibiae respectively. The intermediate organ is subdivided into a proximal part and a distal part. The proximal part of intermediate organ in the foreleg tibia contains 8 ?1 scolopidia; while the proximal intermediate organ in the mid- and hindleg tibia contains 6 ?1 scolopidia. The distal parts of intermediate organs in three leg tibiae all consist of 6 ?1 scolopidia. The entire intermediate organ is covered by a tectorial membrane which is steeply bent into the haemolymph channel at the anterior side. And all scolopidia of the intermediate organ are oriented parallel to the longitudinal axis of the leg .In all legs, the tracheal branches are divided into a small anterior branch and a larger posterior branch proximally to the tibia, and their travel and morphology are similar. Moreover, the two trachea branches run separately and are connected to each other only by a ligament of tracheal epithelium in each leg. The cuticle in the foreleg have no structures resembling tympana. The size and relative ratio of three tubes (the haemolymph channel, the trachea channel andthe nerve-muscle channel) are different at the different position of the tibial organ. At the level of the subgenual organ , the size of three tubes in hindleg is the biggest ,while that of three tubes in foreleg is smaller, and in midleg is the smallest. At the level of the intermediate organ , the size of the haemolymph channel of the hindleg is the largest , and that of the foreleg is the smallest .While the size of the nerve muscle channel and the size of the trachea channel in the hindleg are bigger than those of foreleg and midleg .The investigation indicates that the ratio of haemolymph channel is the biggest among three tubes, and that of trachea channel is the smallest. The prothoracic spiracle of T. hoffinanni is 1195 u m in length and is closed by three valves, while the mesothoracic and metothoracic spiracles are closed by two valves and their length is 765 u m and 250 U m respectively. In the natural position ,about half of the spiracle length is covered by the pronotum.A group of campaniform sensilla is located dorsally in the cuticle at the level of the tibial organ in each leg. The fore- and midleg tibiae of male adults both contain 11 campaniform sensilla, and those of female adults contain 12 campaniform sensillae. While there are 13 campaniform sensillae in the hind-tibia of male and female adults. One more companiform sensillum is located at the posterior side of the tibiae. In the thesis the structure of tibial organs in T. hoffinanni are compared with the structures in Tettigonioidea, Gryttoides^Troglophilus neglectus (Rhaphidophoroidea, Rhaphidophoridae)and Hemideina crassidens ( Stenopelmatoidea, Stenopelmatidae) .The tibial organ...
