Scafterometer wind observations cann抰 be used directly 昮or the application study of sea surface wind field and the observation and evaluation of information concerned sea surface wind field because the scatterometer swath is not wide enough to cover the sea area researched and the scatterometer wind observations are made irregularly in space and time due to the sampling scheme of the scatterometer. we employed a geostatistic method, known as the Kriging method to produce a weekly or monthly gridded scalar wind field(scale O.5~ X O.5~) using ERS- 1/2 scatterometer data, the method makes use of spatial and temporal empirical structure functions for wind speed~ eastward wind component u and northward wind component v to objectively analyze this vector field. The accuracy of the gridded scalar fields is determined by comparison with scatterometer-retrieved wind fields and with 7-day averages calculated by ESA statistically, the result shows good agreement. Furthermore, we obtain the seasonal characteristics of wind fields of Taiwan strait by analysing the gridded wind field computed above, that is:north-east wind dominates Taiwan strait in winters south-west in summer and north-east wind and south-west wind in spring and fall.
