Cartographic generalization is a core problem in cartography. With the gradual promotion of the GIS applications, the needs of cartographic generalization applications also gradually increased. The land-use map is one important map in land management, land-use planning and services for social economic development. As the social economy develops rapidly and land management becomes strict increasingly, it proposes new requirements for land-use map producing, in which it naturally sets a still higher requirements to the way, efficiency and accuracy of land-use cartographic generalization. In this paper, based on analyzing and discussing the theory and technical methods of the applications of mathematical morphology and cellular automata in land-use cartographic generalization, it puts forward the advantages of the combination of both of them, builds the land-use cartographic generalization program with both mathematical morphology and cellular automata and analyzes several key problems which needs more attentions in building programs. In order to combine theory and practice, it uses the skill of integrating ArcGIS and ENVI/IDL to design and implement the computer auto-generalization program. It uses the land-use map whose size is the same as a county as the test data, analyzes all of the methods of calculating the indices and choosing the parameters in the program, verifies the feasibility of the program and evaluates and analyzes the program according to its quantitative measurements, graphics display and cartographic efficiency by comparing with the program brought by ArcGIS software itself. The results shows that it turns out that the program proposed in this paper is good both in graphic display and statistics and implements generalization automation. It solves the problem in raster data analyzing and proceeding and promotes a new way to do the research land-use cartographic generalization.
