Human society has entered the era of big data due to the explosive growth of data scale.According to the latest announcement by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology,China’s above-scale Internet Enterprises have achieved a steady year-on-year growth in business revenue from 2013(the first year of big data)to 2020.Despite the severe impact of COVID-19 on the national economy,the economy of Internet enterprises is still growing against the trend,which can not help triggering reflection on whether the relevant technological development driven by big data has improved their performance.At the same time,the research on big data in the field of strategic management has turned from the initial hot speculation to pragmatism.Scholars have proposed that big data capability is a firm’s ability to collect,integrate and utilize big data resources to obtain new insights.While the paradox of productivity of big data capability has gradually emerged,and the relationship between big data capability and enterprise performance needs to be further analyzed.Although some scholars have explored their relationship from the perspective of corporate strategy at the theoretical stage,relevant empirical analysis still needs to be further implemented.In this condition,this paper takes Internet enterprises as the research object and discusses the core issue of "how big data capability affects enterprise performance" from the perspective of enterprise strategy.The specific research questions include: Firstly,whether big data capability can improve the performance of Internet enterprises?Secondly,can strategic flexibility and strategic innovation play mediating roles in the relationship between big data capability and Internet enterprises performance? Thirdly,since strategic flexibility and strategic innovation are two important research contents in the field of enterprise strategy,what are their relationships in the process of playing intermediary roles? Fourthly,can environmental uncertainty moderate the impact of big data capability on Internet corporate performance? This paper puts forward proposition hypothesis and conceptual model based on resource-based theory,dynamic capability theory,innovation theory and contingency theory.Relying on the Internet Society of China,we have collected 629 valid samples from employees of Chinese Internet enterprises.It is found that: firstly,big data capability can positively affect the performance of Internet enterprises;secondly,both strategic flexibility and strategic innovation play partial mediating roles in the relationship between big data capability and Internet corporate performance,and the mediating effect of strategic flexibility is greater than that of strategic innovation;thirdly,strategic flexibility and strategic innovation play chain mediating roles between big data capability and Internet corporate performance;fourthly,environmental uncertainty has a positive moderating effect,and technological uncertainty plays greater moderating effects than market uncertainty.The innovations include: Firstly,it constructs an integrated model of the relationship between big data capability and enterprise performance,then reveals the internal mechanism of the effect on Internet enterprise performance from the perspective of enterprise strategy.It traces the chain relationship between big data capability and enterprise performance through strategic flexibility and strategic innovation,then puts forward the resource evolution trend of "resource collection—resource sharing and transformation — resource allocation mode innovation — resource advantage" based on resource-based theory.Besides,it raises the capability evolution trend of "analytical capability—flexible capability — creative capability — capability advantage" based on the dynamic capability theory,and puts forward the strategic evolution trend of "analytical demand — changing demand — creative demand — competitive advantage".Meanwhile,it is considered in an open system based on the contingency theory,and an integrated theoretical model is constructed to open the "black box".Secondly,it breaks through the limitations of the existing research on the mediation path based on the "micro" management process,then analyzes the the impact of big data capability on enterprise performance from the perspective of the "macro" enterprise strategy.The existing researches on the mediating path focus on the "micro" management process from the perspective of dynamic capability,stakeholder,supply chain and organizational learning,which lack the "macro" control from the perspective of enterprise strategy.Thirdly,it makes up for the deficiency that the existing research only considers the contingency effect based on the internal factors,and discusses the boundary conditions of the impact from the external environmental factors.When exploring the contingency factors,existing researches focus on internal factors such as analytical capability,human resource capability,adaptability and hostility of organizations to information system resources,and enterprise big data culture,which ignoring the possibility of contingency influence of external factors,hence this paper makes up for the relevant shortcomings.
