Due to the stagnant global economy and the widening gap between the rich and the poor,political populism and isolationism,and facing many practical challenges such as the Russian-Ukrainian conflict and the COVID-19 epidemic,the traditional globalization model of "Western-centrism" is gradually falling into crisis.To this end,emerging economies such as China have proposed a new conception of globalization,which has won more and more international approvation for its inclusive,equal and shared features.In order to support China participating in global governance and promote a higher level of opening,it is urgent for China’s research universities to cultivate high-quality talents with global competence for the new globalization.However,the current training of global competence in research universities are facing challenges such as rigid educational concepts,incomplete training process,and lack of enough guarantees.In the context of new globalization,this dissertation focuses on three issues of the global competence training for undergraduates in research universities: key components,theoretical models,and influencing factors.To tackle these problems,this paper first defines the conceptionof global competence of undergraduates in research universities under the background of new globalization as “For the goal to build a community with a shared future for mankind,adhering to the attitude of inclusiveness,cooperation,mutual benefit,friendship and respection,students are able to work with people from other cultural backgrounds,and contribute unique wisdom and diverse actions to global development”.Further,within the scope of the above concepts,this dissertation conducts the following research:(1)Through an exploratory multi-case studies,the training model of undergraduates’ global competence in six research universities including Harvard University are investigated,and the constituent elements were extracted by content analysis.(2)Using the ISM to sort out the logical relationship among these elements,and explaining the main connotations of the elements from the background of new global order.Based on these researches,we put forward the theoretical model,VI collaborative mechanism and practical strategies of the model.(3)Statistical analyses are carried out based on 1069 valid questionnaires from 14 research universities to verify the influencing factors of global competence training,and to explore the effectiveness of the training.According to the above research,this dissertation draws the following conclusions:(1)The global competence training model for undergraduates in research universities includes 14 key elements in four dimensions: educational philosophy for new globalization,resource for international education,organization structure for supporting internationalization and training process for the promation of global competence.The reform in each dimension of the model presents the following characteristics: the iterative reform of the training process;the long-term adherence to the educational philosophy;and timely adjustment to the organizational structure and resources.(2)In new order of globalization,the theoretical model of the global competence training for undergraduates is a multi-level progressive structure with three levels and four modules: From the perspective of logic,the conception of globalization is "root layer"."Organizational structure" and "resource guarantee" are the "middle layer" to suport transformation and implementation of global conception.Last but most important,"cultivation process" is the "appearance layer";From the perspective of functional structure,this model is driven by the conception of new globalization,supported by organizational structure and resource conditions,and takes the training process for the global employment as the core element.The high-quality operation of the training model is guaranteed by the synergistic mechanism between the elements.(3)In the context of new globalization,the effect of global competence training is also affected by non-cultivation factors such as individual characteristics,family environment,and global participation experience.There are four high-level global competence development paths: integrated,practice and teaching,practice-based and environment-based.The innovations and contributions of this dissertation are as follows: First,based on the conceptual connotation of global competence in the context of new globalization,the key components of the training model are refined and expounded,so that the talent training can change from serving traditional globalization to new globalization.Second,it puts forward a theoretical model of the global competence training for undergraduates under the background of new globalization,and clarifies the structure and operation mechanism,which can help the research university develop undergraduate global competence.Third,from the perspectives of "net effect" and "configuration effect",non-cultivation factors such as individual characteristics,family environment,global participation experience can affect global competence.These conclusions can provide a reference for selecting global talents and dynamically adjusting and optimizing training programs for research universities.
