| Complexity is an inherent feature of projects.Although different projects have different levels of complexity,all projects are characterized by connectivity,dependence,diversity,emergence,uncertainty,etc.The underestimation or neglect of complexity is considered to be an important reason for poor project management performance.In the field of construction project management,prolonged construction period and cost overrun are also frequent phenomena.Therefore,it is urgent to face up to the challenges brought by project complexity to construction project management,and actively explore effective coping strategies.This dissertation focuses on identifying the perceived complexity factors of construction project contractors and verifying the effectiveness of flexible strategies in coping with complexity challenges.Relevant research has strong theoretical and practical significance for improving contractor project complexity management.Based on complexity science,flexibility theory and project management theory,this dissertation takes questionnaire survey and expert Interview as data collection methods,with the help of SPSS and AMOS software,comprehensive use of exploratory factor analysis(EFA),confirmatory factor analysis(CFA),structural equation model(SEM)and other methods,to explore the relationship between construction project complexity,project flexibility and project management performance.The main research contents and achievements include:First,the complexity and flexibility of construction project relevant literature is reviewed,the key concepts is defined,and then analyzes the project complexity,flexibility and project management performance of the mutual influence relations.The relationship model between project complexity and project management performance based on flexibility regulation is constructed,and the research hypothesis is put forward.Secondly,by means of literature analysis and expert interview,the three variables of construction project complexity,project flexibility and project management performance are operationally defined and corresponding measurement scales are developed.The first data collection was completed through questionnaire survey,and130 valid samples were obtained.On the basis of testing the reliability and validity of each measurement scale,SPSS software was used to complete exploratory factor analysis,and a four-dimensional factor model of construction project complexity with17 complexity indicators including social complexity,environmental complexity,technical complexity and stakeholder complexity was obtained.And the construction project flexibility two-dimensional factor model including team flexibility and process flexibility,a total of 8 flexibility indicators.It is found that project capital,geological conditions,survey and design quality,and the relationship between stakeholders are the key indexes that constitute the complexity of domestic construction projects,while information sharing and team learning are the key factors that affect the flexibility of domestic construction projects.Thirdly,the structural equation modeling method was used to construct the structural model of the relationship between construction project complexity and project management performance,the structural model of construction project flexibility and project management performance,and Structural model of the moderating effect of project flexibility.The 267 valid sample data collected for the second time were analyzed,and the proposed research hypothesis was verified.The relationship among project complexity,project flexibility and project management performance is revealed.It is found that construction project complexity has a moderate negative impact on project management performance,while the construction project flexibility has a strong positive impact on project management performance.Project flexibility can adjust the relationship between project complexity and project management performance,and alleviate or suppress the negative impact of project complexity on performance.Fourthly,based on the verified research hypotheses,the management strategy set of contractors to deal with the complexity challenge and improve the project management performance is proposed.The specific strategies are as follows:Contractors should establish complex thinking and focus on complexity management;Contractors should strengthen the management of social complexity,focusing on controlling the impact of key factors such as project funding;The contractor shall adjust the traditional project management style to maintain a moderate degree of flexibility;The contractor should pay attention to the construction of learning project team and cultivate complex project managers;The contractor shall do a good job in information sharing and use BIM technology and other means to improve the ability of the project team to respond to changes.The research results enrich the knowledge and theory of construction project complexity management,provide new management strategies and practical countermeasures for contractors to deal with the challenges of project complexity,and can provide reference for the practice of construction project complexity management in China. |
