| Railway heritage is a special member of regional heritage. With the rapid development of railway technology, the continuous increase of railway length, and the accelerating urbanization process, the future of railway heritage has received widespread concern.Chinese Eastern Railway(CER)is a representative one among others in China. It has gone through a century of time, has witnessed the rise and fall of politics, economy, and culture in the northeast of China. It opened the process of regional modernization. Thus,it was regarded as the evidence of history and culture.Although, this railway maintains the basic function, larger numbers of heritage units along the railway are facing a huge challenge of survival. Therefore, searching an approach for surviving and finding a way back into the public are important.Like other large-scale linear heritage sites, protecting railway heritage also needs to be in a holistic perspective. The way can be used in heritage conservation and utilization to create more value.Heritage corridor is an effective method for large-scale heritage conservation and utilization, which is based on resource integration. The final target is to keep the heritage well and to develop the regional culture and economy.Among many stakeholders involved in heritage protection, the public is the main subject of protection.Public participation is regarded as the effective measure for the sustainable development of heritage.Because of the significance of interpretation between the public and the heritage,"Interpretation" has been a powerful tool for the popularization of heritage conservation. This study takes interpretation as a viewpoint to discuss the issue on conservation, management and sustainable development of industrial heritage of CER.Knowing the history and characteristics of industrial heritage is the foundation in this study.Firstly, heritage interpretation was explained from the perspective of communication.Secondly, based on the comparison of linear heritage protection methods, the applicability of the heritage corridor method was clarified.Thirdly,a theoretical framework was built by grouping the relative theories with heritage conservation, recreation, and experience, fitting for interpretive system planning. Then, drawing on the theoretical method of recreational opportunity spectrum,a framework for identifying heritage interpretation opportunities composed of "heritage interpretability, recreational opportunities, and other influence" was proposed. Moreover, conducting a questionnaire survey is to obtain the elements that affect the opportunity for heritage interpretation from the public, and then,an evaluation model of heritage interpretive opportunity was established by the use of statistical method. This model has the ability to interpret 24 factors of interpretation opportunity and the relationship of these factors. Finally, taking the characteristics of heritage corridor into consideration,a three-level of CER interpretation system was proposed, including comprehensive planning, interpretive planning on urban area and interpretive planning on heritage unit. The detailed stage of each part mainly included interpretation theme, interpretive node, interpretive facility, and interpretive route.A typical section of CER was selected as a case study to demonstrate the operability of this method. This study takes CER as a research object and discusses the construction of a reasonable interpretive system for heritage corridor aiming at achieving the win-win goal of heritage conservation and regional improvement. This study demonstrated the significance of interpretation in the field of heritage conservation, emphasized the key role of the public, presented three sections of heritage interpretability, defined the factors that influence the opportunity for heritage interpretation, and proposed a series of approaches to build a more effective interpretive system. With the increasing development of regional heritage, this study explored an operational way that can be used in large-scale heritage conservation and development, proposed a set of approaches for interpretive planning of heritage corridor. In the long run,it can provide reference and enlightenment for conservation and development of similar type of heritage site and interpretive planning in other fields. |
